uccSTUFF | COMMERCIAL LAW: UCC Collateral Types [Last Modified: Thursday, 16-Jan-2020 16:03:22 EST ]

The table below sets forth in outline form the different types of collateral under the Uniform Commercial Code (see UCC Art. 9, s. 9-102). The main categories of collateral are set forth in bold typeface in the middle column of the table. Any item of UCC collateral fits into one of these main categories. The categories are intended to be exclusive--an item of collateral fits into one main category but not two.  For example, a "deposit account" is not an "account", nor is a "general intangible" also a "document".  Similarly, each item of collateral fits into a subcategory of the main category set forth in ordinary typeface--but not into more than one subcatergory in the righthand column of the table. For example, if a good is "equipment" it is not also "inventory". Types of collateral indicated in italic type face in the righthand column are supplemental categories of identification which are not exclusive but which merit some form of special treatment. You should look at this chart in connection with TEXT p.79-85 (types of collateral defined in the UCC).
